The importance of the Wittgenstein family in the promotion and sponsorship of the fine and applied arts in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century is well documented. The artistically-gifted Paul Wittgenstein, brother of industrialist Karl, and uncle to the celebrated philosopher Ludwig, was an enthusiastic patron of the Wiener Werkstätte. In 1906, he commissioned Josef Hoffmann to design an apartment at Salesianergasse 7 in Vienna’s 3rd district for his son Hermann (1879–1953) and his wife Lyda (1879–1964), née Fries.
