Description & Technical information
designed by: Josef Hoffmann attr., Vienna, around 1904/05
executed by: Wiener Werkstätte attr.
Original top in black and white marble (fractures professionally glued together), surface slightly cleaned and repolished, excellent original condition.
Between 1901 and 1905, Josef Hoffmann designed a number of very similar tables. An almost identical table was to be found in the Wiener Werkstätte sales rooms at Neustiftgasse 32 (reception and exhibition room, Wiener Werkstätte, WWF 105-279-2). The kinship of the two tables cannot be overlooked. A smaller variation was also shown in the showrooms (screen with seating group in the Wiener Werkstätte reception and exhibition room, WWF 99-22-2, 1905). As early as 1901/02, Hoffmann designed a drawing room table of similar structure, though much more decorative, for Hugo Henneberg’s villa (Das Interieur, Band IV, 1903, p. 135) as well as for the residence of Director P. (Das Interieur, Band V, 1904, p. 9). Our table fits into this sequence of designs very well. Thus, it is almost completely certain that this drawing room table was designed by Josef Hoffmann.
