The European Fine Art Fair returns to Manhattan this week for the first edition of TEFAF New York Spring. As with the inaugural TEFAF New York Fall edition in 2016, organisers once again chose the historic Park Avenue Armoury to host the fair, also again enlisting Dutch design firm Tom Postman Design to create the exhibition space.
Built in 1880, the Park Avenue Armoury resembles an elegant mansion from the outside, but the interior is a monstrous, industrial space evoking an empty airplane hangar. As with previous TEFAF events designed by the firm, the challenge for Tom Postman Designs was to metamorphose the cavernous hall into an intimate, welcoming space. The additional test for this event was to make the environment distinctly contemporary as TEFAF New York Spring represents a bold leap outside of the comfort zone for organisers, since their focus for the first time is on Modern and Contemporary art and design.
The first visitors to experience the transformed space will be VIP attendees of the 3 May preview event, which benefits Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre. General admission to TEFAF New York Spring runs from 4-8 May. For a full list of the 93 exhibitors, click here
