Van Haeften keeps it in the family as London celebrates Master Paintings Week

11/06/2012

IF you are a fine art lover you will be aware that Masterpiece is not the only show in town at the end of June. Indeed, there will be a host of other shows around Mayfair and St. James’s when from June 29 to July 6 for the fourth year 23 leading dealers get together for Master Paintings Week.

Haldane Fine Art, Noortman Master Paintings and Theo Johns join the line-up for the first time.

Special exhibitions and other events will be staged and new discoveries unveiled, among them the enchanting moonlit seascape by Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714-1789) at Bernheimer-Colnaghi (illustrated here) and at Fergus Hall Master Paintings a c.1617 study of a young man by Sir Anthony van Dyck, executed during the painter’s collaboration with Rubens.

The amiable Dutch Old Masters specialist Johnny Van Haeften mounts a loan exhibition of his namesake (and distant relative) Nicolaes van Haeften (1663-1725), a long-overlooked Dutch painter and printmaker, while Philip Mould, never one to miss a marketing opportunity, continues Jubilee celebrations with a show of portraits of royalty through the ages.

And talking of marketing Master Paintings Week may have an emphasis on Old Masters but is not averse to some new tricks and since June 6 visitors to the capital might have noticed 10 black cabs sporting the MPW logo and on July 1 and 2 five similarly emblazoned rickshaws will ferry people around the galleries, courtesy of MPW.
