Description & Technical information

In "The Bather" a young man is depicted looking wistfully out to sea whilst basking in the glorious sunlight. It appears to be a summer’s day and the bather has found a secluded pool. The light shimmers off the ocean and pool giving a broad variation of blues and turquoises. One may also observe the interesting juxtaposition of the model’s smooth, soft skin against the harsh, rugged surface of the rock on which he sits. The sun beats down on both the man and the rock face, giving way to an array of complimentary textures and tones. Tuke drew inspiration from the Cornish coast and the activities of its people throughout his life and The Bather is a perfect example of the artist’s approach to painting in which harmony of colour and light are key.
