Description & Technical information

This Iznik tile is covered in a white slip and decorated with cobalt-blue, turquoise and red pigments under a transparent glaze. Large blossoms and swaying saz leaves are depicted against a white ground, while tulips set against a blue ground fill the upper corner. The sharp divide between the background colours, and the way in which the flower motifs appear to continue beyond the borders, indicate that this tile would have been part of a greater decorative composition. For comparative examples, see Bilgi nos. 45 & 75.
