Description & Technical information

European Market
from the Golden Gate Collection

A Chinese export porcelain dinner plate with a central scene of two hounds chasing a stag, the cavetto with an iron red scale pattern and the rim with panels  of flowers in famille rose and bianca-sopra-bianca, reserved on a grisaille cell diaper ground.

The image here is very similar to a detail from a ‘Drawing Book’ print by Robert Sayer, which also shows a deer and two dogs like this - though without the tree, so it cannot be attributed with confidence. The tree is similar to ones in engravings made after paintings by Oudry, which also include deer and dogs like this but no source has been found.
