Description & Technical information

Cueing Up, 2015, is exemplary of PJ Crook’s technique of painting directly onto wood. Her innovative use of the wooden frame works both as a literal framing device and as part of the composition’s narrative. By painting additional figures onto the frame, such as the man on the far right with his hand in his pocket, Crook’s scene transitions from a formal snooker game to a more casual setting.

The foreground figures on the left and right of the frame hold cues, further framing the central scene. Crook uses a luminescent green on the snooker tables, emphasising the deep brown tones of the room. All the people in the room are dressed in grey and blue, except for the two central snooker players. This anonymity is typical of Crook’s work.
