Description & Technical information

Stones is from the oeuvre of contemporary mixed media artist, Astor Milan Salcedo. This work is part of the series entitled Construction Series #2 – BLOHM & VOSS. For this collection, Salcedo has used large prints of his own photography of construction sites and equipment belonging to Blohm and Voss (a large ship building and engineering firm) as well as industrial landscapes, and adorned them with bright streaks of oil paint. This particular work depicts a stack of huge stone slabs, piled up and photographed in black and white. The stones are different shades of grey and white, and display various printed and sprayed-on numbers. This bare photograph is contrasted with Salcedo’s addition of sweeps of bright, clashing oil paint that adorn the surface. Salcedo believes that construction is the greatest expression of human improvement and evolution, and his pieces aim to cultivate an emotional response in the viewer.
