Description & Technical information

This beautiful painting is from 1876, a period in Hermelin’s career when he was a fully established artist, demonstrating his early impressionist technique. The work is from his travels to the United States as he was appointed the Commissioner for the Swedish art exhibit at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in that year. The work shows figures on the boardwalk at Cape May at Sunset. Cape May in New Jersey was in close proximity to Philadelphia, connected by a rail line and was the go to place for the wealthy of the region to enjoy their weekends.
