The cover set with an enamel of a gentleman dressed in the Baroque taste with long curled grey wig, white shirt, golden yellow coat and a scarlet red cape, framed by chased and engraved lemon gold laurel branches, ribbon tied bow surmount, the border spaced by rosettes and sprays, the base with similar ground centred by an oval reserve with a cartography trophy with globe, chart and measuring calipers in three gold coloured.

The miniature is possibly a portrait of Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706), who was a French cartographer and engineer. His major publications were Description de L'Univers (1683) in 5 volumes, and Les Travaux de Mars ou l'Art de la Guerre (1684) in 3 volumes.
