Description & Technical information
A large and very fine male waist-band or belt consisting of 4 sections of tiny black shell discs beads, strung together in horizontal bands spaced with 8 wooden spacers to form a larger decorative program. The beads are strung on coconut fiber, with all the woven sennit coming together into double ties on either end.
Period: 19th century.
Origin: Chuuk Islands (Truk), Caroline Islands, Micronesia.
Dimensions: 83.7 x 14.2 cm (33 x 5⁵/₈ inches)
Provenance: Provenance : Dr. Albert Hahl (1868/1945), Minister of Justice of German New Guinea (1896-1902) then Governor (1902/1914). By descent; acquired from the family.
Literature: See an identical belt acquired from the Goedfroy Museum collection in 1885 by the Museen für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig und Dresden.
