Description & Technical information

Large snuff box with angled corners in gold of varying hues. The panels of the box are ornamented with ivory plates featuring historical characters and symbols from the French Revolution. Robespierre, for example is flanked by fasces and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the adoption of which in 1789 he played a role. Danton, on the cover, is surrounded by two historical figures. These portraits are protected by plates of beveled crystal. The body of the box features portraits of Charlotte Corday, Marat, Camille Desmoulins, and, most likely, Saint Just. The angled corners are embellished with Athéniennes (incense burners on tripods). The panels are framed with a frieze of flowers and laurel leaves in several shades of gold.
