Description & Technical information
Period: Middle Kingdom 2040 to 1782 BC
Provenance: Previously in the Private Collection of Carl Leonhard Burckhardt (1902-1965), who built up his collection with his wife Mariann Burckhardt-Reinhart in Alexandria from the 1930s.
Thence possibly by descent to Mariann Burckhardt-Reinhart, who inherited part of Carl Leonhard Burkhardt’s collection, moved to Basel in 1971 and divided her portion of the collection between her four children in 1978.
Thence by descent to his son Christophe Burkhardt (d. 2019) who moved to Switzerland in 1966 with the part of his father’s collection he had inherited in 1965 and received the rest of his collection from his mother in 1978.
Thence by descent to Christophe Burkhardt’s second wife Jutta Gold (the object can be seen in a photograph of the collection dated 16th May 1979 taken for their marriage inventory list, which comes alongside the signed marriage contract).
