Formerly belonging to, or perhaps gifted by, Mrs J R Mellon, centred by a principal cushion cut peridot of approximately 18ct, claw set within a border of round brilliant cut diamonds, coronet claw set, mounted in gold, signed 'TIFFANY & CO' and inscribed:-
The inscription reads 'MRS J R MELLON, PITTSBURGH PA', purtaining to The Mellon family, the wealthy and influential American family from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mrs J R Mellon may refer to Rachel Hughley Larimer Mellon (1847-1934), the wife of James Ross Mellon (1846-1934), daughter of William Larimer, a Kansas state senator, American settler, and land developer best known as the founder of Denver, Colorado in 1858. Larimer often went by "General Larimer", having acquired the title in the Pennsylvania Militia.
