Description & Technical information
Recent pre-classic period, Izapa, Mexico
This anthropomorphic sculpture has a compact body, muscular arms, wide shoulders, an accentuated facial expression with deeply hollowed-out almond-shaped eyes, and a sharp bearded chin. The general appearance evokes a high-rank dignitary. The colour of the stone adds to the statue’s beauty and intense presence.
The Izapa culture owes its fame to a large archaeological site located in the south of the Mexican State of Chiapas. It may have existed there as early as 1500 BC
