Description & Technical information

A study for Clairin’s painting of Ophelia in the Thistles for which the model was likely Sarah Bernhardt. The painting, formerly in the collection of Michel Perinet in Paris, was on the art market in London in 1984 and is today in a private collection.

Signature: Stamped with the studio vente stamp (Lugt 448) at the lower left.

Provenance: Probably the second posthumous Georges Clairin studio sale, Paris, Galerie Georges Petit, 5-6 February 1920, possibly as part of lot 155 (‘Dix aquarelles inachevées; études diverses, fleurs, figures, etc.’)
