Description & Technical information

An early 19th century rosewood and parcel-gilt side cabinet in the manner of George Smith, the later grey rectangular inset marble top with a stylised leaf border above a pair of doors with panelled silk enclosing an interior with two shelves and flanked by leopard monopodia, the whole raised on a plinth base.

This cabinet with its striking simulated bronze monopodia displays the strong influence of the Regency designs of George Smith (c.1786-1826). Smith’s designs were widely distributed in his pattern book of 1808, ‘A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration’, in which he proudly declared himself the ’upholder extraordinary to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales’.
