Description & Technical information
This impression is unrecorded in Schreiber or Schreiber/Heitz, and is not in Jammes. It appears in one other coffret, formerly Les Enluminures (Gothic Traveling Coffers Revisited, 2015, no. 3), the present example in better condition, with less triming and brighter color. Produced in Paris, this Coffer and its print demonstrate the impact of the circulation of German prints in the time of Dürer. The well-known biblical text from John is used in the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin, as well as other devotional contexts. This box does not preserve its horsehair cushion. The lid perhaps hides an unopened secret compartment, as has been discovered in other examples.
