Arethusa, daughter of Nereus and Doris, is depicted here with  her typical elaborate hairstyle. As in the Syracuse silver decadrams dating back to 415-400 BC signed by Kimon, Arethusa wears earrings and a pearl necklace.
The cameo is expertly carved in high relief and mounted in a stunning French brooch with aquamarines and small diamonds.
