Paul Feiler

Broken Rectangle, 1964

Godson & Coles

Broken Rectangle, marks a pivotal turning point in Feiler’s artistic development. Where he moves away from portraying the experience of harsh elemental forces such as wind and rain to begin a more refined and contained exploration of space, light, colour. Here, the floating architectural forms set against white voids of infinite depth foreshadow the deeply ordered, serene geometric compositions of the subsequent and final phase of his artistic maturity.
At this stage Feiler had exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions spanning Europe and America and was elected Head of Painting at the West of England College of Art in 1963. His work exemplifies a distinct approach to abstraction - one that harmonises the influences of his contemporaries with his personal vision. As such, he stands out not only as a vital figure within the St Ives group but also as a pioneering artist whose work continues to resonate with the complexities of perception and the experience of landscape.
