Literature: These ancient curious Scottish stone balls embody the mystery of mathematics, physics and cosmology and reveal a wealth of prehistoric knowledge of astonishing sophistication. The form of the balls varies, but the majority of those found have a regular distribution of knobs carved on the surface. Around 400 have been found over a fairly wide area of Scotland with a particular concentration of finds within a 50 mile radius of Aberdeenshire.
Carefully made of hard stone in the shape of ornamented spheres or platonic solids with carved bosses and facets, these objects argue a sophisticated understanding of geometry by an ancient people. Some people believe they were used for divination purposes, however they are certainly one of the earliest examples of experiments in solid geometry.
