Jules Vermeire

Jules Vermeire was a Belgian-born Dutch sculptor best known for his female heads, masks and charcoal drawings who worked in a variety of different mediums, from wood, marble, stone and even glass. Vermeire studied at the academies of both Ghent and Antwerp. When the First World War broke out, he fled with his brothers to the Netherlands, where he lived for the rest of his life in The Hague and, subsequently, Wassenaar. Vermeire initially worked with wood and animal horn and later with bronze, marble and stone. His prolific drawings are characterised by the beautiful use of grey and black, with soft tones. Vermeire’s work can be found in the collections of the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
