Vorvinter: Between Winter and Spring in Tattby
Executed in February 1918, this striking watercolour encompasses all the features that made Oskar Bergman a much-admired artist in his day; an idyllic representation of virginal landscape, an attention to detail influenced by Japonisme, and a reverence for nature. Bergman was particularly fond of depicting winter scenes, which allowed him to evoke a sense of preternatural calm in his landscapes. Located near the coastal resort of Saltsjöbaden in the Stockholm archipelago, just southeast of the city, Tattby is the site of a nature reserve where Bergman produced a handful of views of the surrounding countryside.
Provenance: The studio of the artist, and by descent to his son, Lars Olof Bergman, Sweden.
