Description & Technical information

The scene is located in Mercin in the country house of the Fontaine,
where Maurice Denis was used to stay since the beginning of the 1890's.?
Arthur Fontaine (1860-1931) was an engeneer and a high-ranking o icial
who ultimately presided the future Bureau international du travail
thanks to his social ideas.
In 1891, he married Marie Escudier,
whose two sisters, Jeanne and Madeleine, would respectively take as
spouses the compositor Ernest Chausson and the painter Henry Lerolle.
Therefore, a little artistic and litterary circle was formed around the
Fontaine couple, completed by Maurice Denis (introduced to them by Henry
Lerolle), Edouard Vuillard, Claude Debussy or André Gide, who o en
stayed in Mercin. The Fontaine, passionate collectors of Denis' work,
were notably the first owners of his masterpiece Les Muses, today
conserved in the Musée d'Orsay.
About "Portrait de Mlle Fontaine à
Mercin", it represents Jacqueline, one of Arthur and Marie's six
children. We can see three of her brothers and sisters sketched in the
background.
