Description & Technical information

This outstanding mirror closely follows a design by Matthias Lock in his ‘A New Book of Ornaments for Looking Glass Frames,’ 1752 (see illustration)

Detailed analysis of the layers of decoration showed the original decoration to be an off-white. Careful removal of the later layers revealed the original decoration in a wonderful state of preservation.

The cresting surmounted by a pagoda with a balcony and waterfall over C Scrolls and trailing foliage flanked by two ho ho birds. The frame with columns and pilasters bordered with C scrolls and branches with leaves and flowers, rocks and waterfalls. The lower frieze with further rockwork, acanthus and flowers.
