Description & Technical information

A beautifully carved sculpture of Jesus, delicately carved with closed eyes, lightly parted lips, and facial hair featuring carved waves for texture. A head such as this would have most likely been placed atop of a life sized sculptural body. The presence of the Portuguese in Goa encouraged carvings of Christian imagery in ivory and wood.

Comparative material:
There is a similar carved wooden head of Jesus (diferences in the openwork eyes) in the Archaeologic Museum of Old Goa in the Convent of St Francis, acc. no. 634.
