Master Art

A circular dish decorated with polychrome Iznik style motifs such as carnations, hyacinths, and prunus blossoms. The base of the dish is impressed with the 'TH DECK' mark in blue, indicating that it was made by 19th century French ceramicist Theodore Deck (1823-1891). Deck was director of the Musée de la Céramique, Sèvres.

The introduction to France during the nineteenth century of traditional Iznik pottery heavily inspired and influenced European ceramicists, particularly, Theodore Deck. Inspired by the motifs and use of colour, Deck's designs were first exhibited at the 'Exposition des Arts Industriels de Paris' in 1861. 

In a report written by the French commissioner to the 1871 London Great Exhibition, it is suggested that Deck’s interest for Iznik ceramics started with an Iznik fragment given to him by Adalbert de Beaumont in 1859.
