Description & Technical information

The silver tulwar hilt with flat circular pommel, engraved with damascened gold flowers. The hilt of standard tulwar form; cut with two convex shapes on each side. The artist has engraved a floral pattern into the piece, which is distinctive for its acanthus-style leaves and tall, vertical stems. Further, gold overlay emphasizes the engraved flowers which have a circular centre and four large petals. The top features a sun-style motif engraved in metal and further acanthus-style leaves and gold flowers line the rim. The Zarko Selo Collection houses a tulwar hilt which is similar in its size, style and decoration (Reprinted in, Egerton, An Illustrated Handbook of Indian Arms, London, William H. Allen & Co., 1880, pl. III, fig. 6).
