Description & Technical information

The design of the mirror is inspired by the work of the great 18th century carver and designer Matthias Lock, who published several volumes of his work between the 1750s and 1780s. The monkey and lobster at the base of the mirror are based on the fable ‘The monkey and the fishermen’ from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, illustrated by Francis Barlow in the early 18th century.

The mirror has replaced 18th century centre and border plates.
