Description & Technical information
A remarkably sensitive and naturalistic human head carved as a pendant or ornament.
The exceptional naturalism of this master-piece offers a timeless quality and universality. The expressive power of the ancestor with its open and deeply carved mouth - here engaged in a long scream - is unusual in the Eskimo corpus of carving. There is a monumentality here that belays the actual minute size of the carving. Mid to late Thule culture, Greenland or Eastern Canada (Newfoundland). Mineralized walrus tusk (odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) with a fine crackled patina. 3,4 cm.
Origin: Eastern Canada
Medium: Mineralized walrus tusk
