Description & Technical information

The present sheet, inscribed as having been drawn on the morning of the 30th of May 1844, was drawn towards the end of Carl Messman’s studies at the Kunstakadamiet in Copenhagen. The district of Nærum, in the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, is dominated by the country estate of Nærumgaard (or Nærumgård), seen in the right background of this watercolour. Built in the late 18th century, the house was converted into an orphanage in 1888, and the surrounding land sold to the municipality in 1906.

This drawing bears the drystamp of the Danish collector Benjamin Wolff (1790-1866).
