A minute and very fine kapkap with an intricate cut-out centerpiece in the form of a stylized anthropomorphic figure in the hocker position with a dentate surround superimposed on a shell disc. Schouten islands and Murik Lakes region of the Sepik North Coast, PNG, Melanesia.  4,2 cm Ø. German colonial contact period 1860’s to early 20th century.

Origin:  Melanesia
Medium: Melo Amphora shell, turtle-shell, and industrial string with a small piece of animal skin attached at the rear.
Provenance: Ex private French collection.
