Description & Technical information

"La Seine à Chatou" executed in 1907, marks a turning point in the artist's oeuvre both keeping characteristics of Fauvism and a new influence from Paul Cézanne. Chosing a pure and rigorous colour, he gives us a perfect example of the "incendiary" look that he takes on his environment, and that he transcribes on the canvas.
Fascinated by the modern life's bubbling, Vlaminck translates here the reality of a landscape transformed by the industrial activity thanks to frenetic brushstrokes, giving a strong intensity to the scene. The two chimneys
arising from the horizon punctuate the composition by contrasting with the horizontality of the two barges on the foreground and of the bank. Vlaminck plays with strong contrasts, opposing the outline of those two
tubes to the sky lightness, or the massive shape of the boats to the crystal water of the Seine. The canvas if filled with blue shades, from sky-blue to ultramarine, enlightened here and there by touches of the red and orange of the houses and barges.

In 1893, aged 16, Vlaminck settled in Chatou, in the Parisian suburb. His youth town would be one of his main sources of inspiration and gave its name to the
pictorial school composed of Vlaminck and Derain, encountered in 1900 and with whom he would share a studio for many years.
