Description & Technical information
Painted iron and cast iron, partially over-painted old paintwork, rust, original glass inserts, original condition; the jardinières are wall mounted and can turn through 180°.
When one looks at these exceptional wall-mounted jardinières, the first thought is that they must be by Otto Wagner. His work for the Vienna Stadtbahn (metropolitan railway) is known to everyone in Vienna. The stylistic kinship of the design of these jardinières with the fencing for the railway is obvious. The concentric circles used in the design are not the only indication that Wagner created these jardinières. Other hints are the simple but decorative lines and the high level of functionality due to the hinging.
Despite intensive research we could not find any indications as to where these eight flower containers were used, but it must have been in a prominent place. Unfortunately the Wagner archive, housed in his former residence at Döblergasse 4, has been closed and is no longer accessible.
