Literature: Together with horses, bulls were one of the favourite subjects of animal bronzes of the Renaissance and were probably inspired by the ancient small votive antiquities of Egyptian, Greek and Roman origin. In Christian iconography the bull is the symbol of St Luke the Evangelist and was sacrificial.
